Facilitating renewable energy projects in the RMG sector

Background

The Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) is a national entity in Bangladesh that is a market leader in providing renewable energy and infrastructure financing in Bangladesh. Specifically, IDCOL works to bridge the financing gap for developing medium to large-scale infrastructure financing.

The Challenge

Energy efficiency and consumption (EE&C) measures are being taken in Bangladesh’s RMG sector to lower the cost of producing apparel, lower the country’s overall emissions, increase productivity in the apparel sector and help the country achieve its ambitious export targets. The government of Bangladesh recently signed a $185 million financing agreement with the World Bank to add approximately 310 MW of renewable energy generation capacity to contribute to reliable, affordable clean energy and air. To bridge the gap in the long-term domestic financing market for renewable energy, the project will also support IDCOL to manage a renewable energy financing facility for both rooftop and utility scale solar PV.

IDCOL approached MiB because they needed data to support them with locating

The Solution

MiB was able to deliver data that included details of the factory’s size, number of machines, production capacity, total floor area, GPS location, name and address and number of workers. This was delivered in a bespoke dataset, in a simple-to-read CSV format.

Factory’s production capacity, number of machines and number of workers were critical to assess the energy consumption of factory. Whereas floor space data helped to identify available roof top space for fitting solar panel. MiB also provided data of whether the factory is already using solar panels or not. Address, GPS location, and the contacts helped IDCOL to initiate contact with potential factories as per their selection criteria.

The Result

A list of 3752 relevant factories were provided to IDCOL and the list has helped the team to identify, filter and contact potential factories for their programme, saving the team a significant amount of resource.

Testimonial

MiB’s data was invaluable in supporting our team with identifying appropriate factories to contact for our rooftop solar initiative. Not only did it save our team time, but through all the datapoints, we were quickly able to identify a priority list of targets and focus our outreach, which has been hugely successful thus far.
